Day 1
Hiking Cosigüina Volcano
Cosigüina Volcano is located in the utmost northwest corner of Nicaragua and has a height of 859 meters. Its stretched slopes are mostly covered with trees and run down almost to the Gulf of Fonseca. The volcano consequently does not appear to be a volcano, judging by its shape. It merely seems to be a long-stretched hill. The crater is not easily visible from down below.
Hiking to the crater, however, is not very hard. The slopes are not steep and the volcano provides some great views..

Natural frontier of three nations
The Islotes of Cosigüina are rocky islands formed in 1835 as a result of the most violent eruption in recent Nicaraguan history. The Cosigüina Volcano erupted and part of its crater was blown into sea. A group of small, rocky islands, measuring maybe a couple hundred meters in length, are a trace of this explosion.
These so-called Islotes de Cosigüina are located not far away from the main land in the Gulf of Fonseca, a bay bordering Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. The islands lie on Nicaraguan territory and nowadays provide shelter to hundreds if not thousands of birds. The birds most obviously present are pelicans and frigatebirds. Other birds residing on the islands include cormorants, seagulls, and darters.

Day 3
Climbing San Cristobal Volcano
San Cristóbal volcano is the highest active volcano in Nicaragua at 1,745 msnm (5,725 feet). Located near to the northwest corner of the country. It has been throwing ash and sand for years making this region one of the most important agriculture area in Nicaragua.
San Cristóbal is a nearly symmetrical stratovolcano, rising in a distinctive cone shape. The South West slope is the longest, and the crater rim on that side rises 140 meters.
The crater is 500 x 600 meters in size. While the volcano was at one point covered in tropical forests, the large quantities of gas and smoke that it emits constantly have killed off much of the vegetation.
Ascending the San Cristóbal is one of the most difficult climbs in Nicaragua. The steep slopes make it hard to reach the huge crater. It takes a whole day to ascend and descend the volcano, and you should be in very good condition It will anyway get hot once the sun is fully shining.
This climb is certainly a challenge, but the views of the area and the experience of reaching the crater are surely rewarding.
